It took longer than everyone would have liked but after a week-long rain postponement, Sydney Dragway served up some scorching nitro action for an eager Australia Day crowd.
The Top Fuel field was all action with six quality cars ensuring the performance gaps were small, the racing was tight and the win was within reach for all the teams.
Damien Harris scored the first round win over Phil Read, who had a wild pass for the newly liveried, Hydraulink Top Fuel Dragster.
The LTFR team took a first round win also, with driver Phil Lamattina beating out Peter Xiberras.
Current champion and last year’s Santo’s Summer Thunder winner, Wayne Newby also took a win over teammate Richie Crampton.
The Lamattina dragster collected another win in round two, again over a hard charging Peter Xiberras, with a 3.88-second pass just getting the win light ahead of the PremiAir Hire dragster.
With the LTFR car making the final against Newby to compete for the event win, Phil Lamattina was happy to celebrate a successful return to the seat of the family Top Fuel car and a 3.90-seond pass was a great result. It was not enough to beat Newby however, who recorded a scorching 3.82-second run.
Lamattina now sits third in the Australian Top Fuel Championship standings.
The team will now head to the Perth Motorplex for the first Top Fuel racing event at the venue in two years!
